Portrait Demo

Our focus this week was on both 'window portraits' and more professional portraits taken in the studio. We also continued to learn about Gimp and the many tools it has for editing and manipulating the photos we took.
The photo on the right was taken by a window using the natural light from that and a white bounce paper on the other side to reflect the light onto the other side of the subject's face.
The photo on the left was taken in a studio with professional-type lights. The one behind is called the hair light and there is also one on either side of the subject.
This was a great assignment as we learned more about taking a great photo and editing it to make it look even better.

Assignment Five: Portraits

This past week, I took photos of my mom and my two younger brothers for this week's portrait assignment. I think they all came out quite well and the sunset was wonderful in quite a few of them.
Here is my best shot...

ISO: 125
Aperture: f/2.8
Exposure: 1/250

And below is the slide show of the rest of my portraits.

Gimp Assignment: Changing the Context

For this assignment, we took a good picture of the school and added other pictures using Gimp to change the context of the photo. Though it was somewhat of a silly assignment, it taught us to use layers, resizing, perspective, and other tools in Gimp.

Assignment Four: Motion

I focused on motion this week and used the family Border Collie, Gwyn, as my subject. It worked out quite well because she is absolutely crazy about the tennis ball! It was difficult to have the background blurred and Gwyn completely in focus mainly because she was moving so fast.

This is the photo that best represented the motion in the background...

ISO: 100
Aperture: f/10
Shutter: 1/60

I also liked this photo because she was in focus, but I didn't capture the background motion nearly as well. This one had a much faster shutter which allowed the picture to be more focused on the subject.

And here is the slideshow of the rest of my motion shots.

Panoramic Demo

For the past few days, we have been working on panoramic photos. This is done by taking a series of photos on a steady surface that overlap by about 20 percent. You can then layer these photos in Gimp or Photoshop to get one long picture. I found it pretty interesting!

Here's the final picture:

Assignment Three: Black and White

This week I explored the 'black and white' side of photography. This is a really great effect to do with photos because it focuses your eye on the small details of the picture; some that you may not notice with the bright colors visible. It also adds a simplicity to them and to me it makes them seem clean and crisp which I really enjoy. My best photo is of one of the Arabian horses at a barn not far from my house. I like the depth of field and the focus on the dark eye while the background is blurred out. It helped that the horse was white because the darkness of the eye is exaggerated.

Today, we learned about panning. We learned how to take a photo with a moving subject in focus and the background blurred. This is a really great effect to the photo because the blur of the background allows the photo to be in focus and at the center of attention. There were a few difficulties with my photos because it was so bright outside. I had to lower my shutter speed so the motion of Mr. Bush would be picked up by the camera, but I couldn't have it too low as the exposure was way to bright and his white shirt was blown out. I was able to darken up the pictures in Gimp, but not completely.

Here is the same photo in black and white. I'm not sure which I like better though.

Assignment Two: Animal Week

This week was all about animals. I took pictures of the geese at the pond near the high school and while there, I noticed there was a beaver so I snapped a shot of that too. I also took pictures of a parrot and two of my dogs. I continued to work with the exposure triangle and rule of thirds this week. There was a little trouble when it came to the goose pictures as the goose turned out very dark while the water was very light. Luckily, I was able to adjust the levels in photoshop which helped with the darkness of the geese. It also helped bring in and enhance some of the colors of the parrot.

This is the photo of the week:

ISO: 400
F/stop: f/13
Shutter: 1/125

Below is the slideshow of my ten best animal pictures this week.
